Breaking MLB News: D-Backs Get Devastating News on Corbin Burnes

Corbin Burnes to have Tommy John surgery, out until 2026

Corbin Burnes went to visit noted elbow surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles this week. If you're thinking 'that can't be a good thing for a pitcher,' you're correct. And the result of that meeting, plus the MRI imaging he received, as feared, is that Burnes will undergo Tommy John surgery and be out until at least late in the 2026 season.

Burnes was the Snakes' big free agent splash this past winter, with a six-year, $210 million signing that brought the former Cy Young winner to head up the Arizona pitching staff. But after just 11 starts, his season is done.

He had been an iron man of pitchers the past half-decade, as he hadn’t missed a single start since becoming a full-time starter in 2020.

The new ace of the D-Backs' staff started the season slowly with a couple of rough outings, but had rounded into form and overall was delivering as promised, with a 2.66 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP.

Burnes was placed on the injured list earlier this week with what was then being called "elbow inflammation". But with 'inconclusive' MRI results, and a second opinion upcoming from Dr. ElAttrache, the ominous signs were there, and now it's official.

To make matters even worse, Phoenix sports insider John Gambadoro is reporting that he was told that Burnes's recovery will be "longer than 12 months", which is the usual number put on a Tommy John recovery. With ramp-up and rehab games in the minors, it's even possible that Burnes won't make it back in time to have any significant impact—if any at all—on the 2026 season.

It's a brutal blow for the 30-year-old, and the Diamondbacks, who now may have to throw in the towel on the 2025 season, as they sit at .500, with little chance of catching a strong Wild Card-leading core of teams.
