“I probably shouldn't have reacted like that,” Pages said in Spanish, “but he doesn't miss with a slider on the corner, yet he can miss with a fastball?” The outburst led to a tense moment at home plate, though cooler heads prevailed and benches remained in check.
Sign Stealing Suspicion and an Apology from Pages
ESPN’s Alden González noted that Pages thought the Padres might have been retaliating because they believed he was relaying signs from second base in the previous inning. While Pages stood by his frustration, he admitted the adrenaline got the best of him and that he “tried to find a way to apologize.”

Cease, meanwhile, was caught off guard by the confrontation. “I didn’t understand it,” he said. “It’s not going to deter me from throwing inside. I don’t know if I’ve ever hit a Dodger before. It just happens.” Padres third baseman Manny Machado also chimed in, brushing off any intent by saying, “They’ve got way more superstars over there if we want to hit somebody.”
NL West Rivalry Remains as Tense as Ever
While the hit-by-pitch didn’t lead to a full-scale altercation, it reignited the fierce Dodgers-Padres rivalry. Past matchups have included meme trolling, dugout drama, and even flying objects from the stands.
As both clubs battle for supremacy in the NL West, tensions are bound to rise again. Pages, now hitting .282 with 13 homers and 46 RBIs, scored later in the inning, helping power a five-run frame in a game that also featured Shohei Ohtani’s long-awaited return to the mound.
