MLB Trade Rumors: New Team In On Blue Jays' Bo Bichette

The Detroit Tigers are reportedly showing serious interest in acquiring Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette, as the two-time All-Star plays out the final year of his contract.

With Toronto hovering around .500 and Bichette expected to command a massive long-term deal in free agency, several insiders believe the Tigers could strike before the trade deadline or make a strong push this offseason.

Multiple reports, including from The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, suggest that Detroit—along with the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers—could pursue Bichette as a third base option if he’s open to a position change. While he’s long anchored the Blue Jays’ infield at shortstop, flexibility could be key to expanding his market. Bowden estimates Bichette’s next deal could approach six years, $170–200 million, a number Toronto may not match after committing $500 million to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Tigers Seeking Impact Bat, Blue Jays at a Crossroads

The Tigers, leading the AL Central and aiming for a deep postseason run, have a need on the left side of their infield. With Javier Báez moved to center field and Trey Sweeney performing modestly at shortstop, Bichette could be the upgrade Detroit needs. His current numbers—.279 average, 25 RBI, and a 50% hard-hit rate—indicate he's returning to form after a rough 2024.

Meanwhile, Toronto faces a looming decision. If they can't extend Bichette, they risk losing him for nothing in free agency. Trading him as a rental would bring a significant return, especially from a contender like Detroit. A speculative deal proposed by FanSided includes Bichette for Sweeney and lefty reliever Tyler Holton, who’s been solid out of Detroit’s bullpen.

High Stakes for Both Franchises

The Blue Jays' playoff fate may dictate how aggressively they shop Bichette. Sitting behind the Yankees in the AL East, Toronto may be hesitant to trade a key contributor unless they fall further out of contention. However, letting Bichette walk for nothing would be a costly error.

For Detroit, missing out on Alex Bregman in the offseason has added urgency. Bichette would immediately boost a lineup anchored by Spencer Torkelson and a resurgent Báez. The Tigers see this as their window to contend—and Bo Bichette might be the final piece to push them over the top.
