MLB Rumors: Phillies & Red Sox Linked To Blockbuster Trade

Philadelphia Phillies starter Ranger Suarez reacts after inning during 2025 game.

Ranger Suárez’s bumpy return to the Philadelphia Phillies rotation might be setting the stage for an unexpected deadline deal—and the Boston Red Sox could be the team ready to pounce.

The 28-year-old lefty, who’s in the final year of his contract, gave up seven earned runs in just 3.2 innings during his 2025 season debut. While it’s far from a performance that screams “buy low,” Suárez’s underlying velocity and track record still make him an intriguing short-term arm for playoff-hopeful clubs.

Boston’s Rotation Needs and Philly’s Outfield Hole Align

Boston, desperately seeking stability beyond Garrett Crochet in its starting rotation, may be the perfect trade partner. MLB analyst Kerry Miller pointed to the Red Sox as a potential suitor, citing their abundance of outfielders—specifically Ceddanne Rafaela—as a possible match for Philadelphia’s need to improve a lineup hampered by Brandon Marsh’s .130 average.

A straight-up Rafaela-for-Suárez deal seems unlikely, but a larger package swap could suit both teams, especially as the Phillies await top prospect Andrew Painter’s MLB readiness.

Suárez’s Value Lies in Upside—and Urgency

Despite his poor outing, Suárez’s fastball velocity remained steady, suggesting his back stiffness is behind him. If he regains his command in upcoming starts, he could easily regain mid-rotation form.

For the Phillies, the question is whether it’s worth keeping a pending free agent when they could flip him to address more pressing needs. And for the Red Sox, with bullpen struggles mounting and playoff pressure intensifying, Suárez might be the kind of gamble worth taking to shore up the rotation before July.
