MLB Trade Rumors: Astros Have Talked Pete Alonso Trade With Mets

It could be a longshot at this point after the recent NY Mets resurgence, but in what could turn out to be the blockbuster trade of the summer, the Houston Astros have had discussions with the New York Mets about a Pete Alonso deal.

That's the word from ex-MLB GM Jim Bowden, writing in The Athletic.

Just when those discussions took place, or if they still are underway, is anyone's guess. But the Mets have been on a run of late that has lifted them over .500 and to within a half-game of the Wild Card spot. Unless they go into a major tailspin over the next couple of weeks, it would be shocking to see them trade the face of their franchise, despite his looming free agency.

First base has been a disaster for the Astros this season, who have had to eat the remainder of 37-year-old Jose Abreu's contract and release him, after the veteran tanked this season to a .124 average with an OPS+ of 3. Yes, three. That's 97% worse than the average major league hitter. Safe to say, Alonso would be a huge upgrade.

But Polar Bear isn't the only first base bat the Astros are chasing as we approach the trade deadline. Bowden also writes that they've made calls on Christian Walker with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Cody Bellinger with the Chicago Cubs and Andrew Vaughn with the Chicago White Sox.

The Astros are currently only two games back of the Seattle Mariners in the AL West, and 2.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.

The trade deadline is June 30th.
