Top 7 Starting Pitchers Who Remain On Free Agent Market

It feels like Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery are the only two free agent starting pitchers out there, as they seem to be the only ones we hear about these days. But there are a number of other starters still on the open market who can help a major league rotation.

Following is a list of the Top 7 free agent starting pitchers still available:

1. Blake Snell

2. Jordan Montgomery

3. Michael Lorenzen

4. Hyun-Jin Ryu

5. Mike Clevinger

6. Rich Hill

7. Eric Lauer

We know about Snell and Montgomery, both represented by Scott Boras, which explains why they're not signed yet. The price is extremely high for both, and teams are waiting it out, hoping to call Boras's bluff.

Snell is the reigning Cy Young winner in the National League, while Montgomery is a defending World Series champ.

Lorenzen made a name for himself in the 2023 season, authoring a no-hitter in his Philadelphia Phillies home debut in August. He's been a serviceable starter at times during his big league career and made his first All-Star appearance in 2023. He finished the year with a 4.18 ERA, just a tick above his 4.11 ERA in nine major league seasons. He can be a viable No. 3 or 4 starter.

Hyun Jin Ryu is another former All-Star on this list, and came close–twice–to being the second former Cy Young winner on this list as well, finishing second in the balloting with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019, and then third with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2020. Ryu had a strong comeback for the Jays in 2023 with a 3.46 ERA in 11 starts, after sitting out a year after Tommy John surgery.

Clevinger has had an up-and-down career and hasn't returned to his dominant form since missing the 2021 season, also due to Tommy John.

Rich Hill refuses to give up the ghost and plans to pitch yet again this season at the age of 44.
