New York Mets & Yankees Both "Eyeing" The Same Free Agent Player

The New York Mets and New York Yankees are both reportedly showing interest in acquiring free agent infielder Gio Urshela, reflecting a potential cross-town rivalry in the quest for his services.

Urshela, who previously played for the Yankees between 2019 and 2021, is known for his versatility on the field, having covered all four infield positions last season.

Despite a shortened 2023 season due to a fractured left pelvis, Urshela managed a commendable performance with a batting average of .299 over 62 games.

His last full season in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins showcased his capabilities with a .285 batting average, 13 home runs, and 27 doubles over 144 games.

The Mets' interest in Urshela is partly due to their current roster situation, where they are solidified at several infield positions but are considering options for third base.

With Ronny Mauricio's injury, the Mets are likely exploring veteran infielders to bolster their lineup.

Urshela's potential role with the Mets could be significant, especially if their current options for third base, such as Brett Baty, do not perform as expected.

The Yankees, familiar with Urshela's abilities from his previous stint, are also eyeing a reunion.

They value his experience and contribution, particularly recalling his standout 2019 season with the team where he achieved a .314 batting average with 21 home runs.

As both New York teams express their interest, Urshela stands as a valuable free agent in the market, offering experience, versatility, and a proven track record. Photo Credit:  Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports
