Angels Rumors: Team Is Poised To Land Big Free Agent

With Cody Bellinger now re-signed with the Chicago Cubs, there are three big domino free agents still to fall. And according to MLB.com's insider Mark Feinsand, the Los Angeles Angels are poised to land one of Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery.

While Snell has an offer on the table from the New York Yankees, his market is not very robust, says Feinsand, while the Angels are lurking in the background, waiting to pounce. Then he adds:

(Jordan) Montgomery has also drawn interest from the Angels, who appear primed to ultimately land either him or Snell when all is said and done.

Both players are represented by Scott Boras, whose other big client Bellinger was forced to take a much smaller deal than they had been pushing for, at 3 years, $80 million, rather than a long-term deal in the $200 million range. It's being suggested now by many that Snell and Montgomery might also be forced to take a smaller, "bridge" type of deal in the same way, and the Angels would be all on board for that.

The Halos, of course, are trying to recover from a depressing offseason that saw them lose their best pitcher and their best hitter, all in one, in Shohei Ohtani. Either Snell or Montgomery would immediately step in at the top of the rotation taking over as the No. 1 starter in Anaheim.

Feinsand notes that the Red Sox have also been waiting for the price tag on Montgomery to come down, so the Angels could have some competition there.

Snell, late of the San Diego Padres, is the defending Cy Young winner in the National League, his second such honor (in 2018 he was the Cy guy in the AL with the Tampa Bay Rays), while Montgomery has elevated his game the past two seasons, and was a key cog in the Texas Rangers' run to the World Series win last fall.

The Angels rotation currently consists of Reid Detmers, Griffin Canning, Chase Silseth, Patrick Sandoval, and Tyler Anderson.
