Toronto Blue Jays Sign Free Agent Catcher After Solid 2023 Season

The Toronto Blue Jays have recently strengthened their catching depth by signing Payton Henry to a minor league contract.

Henry, 26, announced this development over the weekend.

This move provides the Blue Jays with an experienced catcher who has previously played in the major leagues.

Henry's professional journey includes 20 games in the big leagues during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. During this period, he played for the Miami Marlins and posted a .523 OPS across these games.

Before joining the Blue Jays, Henry spent the entirety of the 2023 season at the Triple-A level with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Last year, with the Brewers Triple-A team, Henry posted a .294/.341/.454 triple-slash line, with nine home runs, 35 RBIs and 32 runs scored across 65 games played.

However, his tenure with the Brewers encountered a setback earlier in the year when Milwaukee removed him from their 40-man roster just a few weeks into the regular season.

This new agreement with the Blue Jays is expected to give Henry a chance to participate in their big league camp, potentially opening avenues for him to make a significant impact at the highest level.

The Blue Jays' decision to bring Henry on board reflects their strategy of building depth and exploring potential in players who have shown promise at various levels of professional baseball. Photo Credit: Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports
