Pittsburgh Pirates Interested In Two Free Agent Sluggers

The Pittsburgh Pirates are actively exploring their options in the free-agent market, with a clear focus on two intriguing candidates: Rowdy Tellez and Dominic Smith.

Both players have captured the Pirates' attention due to their unique strengths and potential to enhance the team's roster.

Rowdy Tellez, who demonstrated his power-hitting prowess in 2022 with the Milwaukee Brewers by smacking 35 home runs, remains a compelling option for the Pirates.

While injuries hampered his 2023 season, the team is keen on harnessing his offensive firepower, provided he can maintain better consistency at the plate.

This past season, Tellez slashed .215/.291/.376, with 13 home runs, 47 RBIs, and 26 runs scored across 105 games played.

On the other hand, Dominic Smith, a former first-round pick, had a standout period with the New York Mets in 2019-2020 before facing challenges in subsequent seasons.

However, his resurgence in 2023 while playing as the Washington Nationals' primary first baseman has piqued the Pirates' interest.

This past season, Smith posted a .254/.326/.366 triple-slash line, with 12 home runs, 46 RBIs, a stolen base, and 57 runs scored over 153 games played.

They see Smith as a versatile asset who can contribute both offensively and defensively.

As the offseason unfolds, the Pirates are carefully weighing their options, considering how Tellez and Smith could fit into their plans for the upcoming season and beyond. Photo Credit: Michael McLoone-USA TODAY Sports
