Angels Rumors: Team Linked to Former Cy Young Contender

The Los Angeles Angels are actually in the playoff hunt, just 2.0 games back of a Wild Card spot. With this being a now-or-never season to make it to the promised last in their attempts to convince Shohei Ohtani to stay, the Angels will be making additions at the trade deadline, by all accounts.

One MLB Insider, Anthony Castrovince, suggests that the team will try to acquire former CY Young contender Lucas Giolito from the Chicago White Sox.

Granted, the 29-year-old is a couple of years removed from his days of getting Cy Young votes, but his turnaround season this year includes a 3.53 ERA. And in fact, if you take out his first two starts of the season, he's pitching to a 2.99 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP and a 99:28 K/BB ratio.

Gioloti was a 2019 All-Star and led the majors in complete games that season (3), while finishing sixth in Cy Young voting.

Castrovince suggests the Angels could use post-hype prospect Jo Adell or their catching depth to land him.

The Angels are looking to add another top-line starter to their rotation, after Ohtani and Reid Detmers, and Giolito would certainly give them a very tough pitching staff.

There will be plenty of bidders on Giolito over the next few weeks, so all eyes will be on him as the Aug. 1st trade deadline approaches.
