New York Mets Sign Former Home Run Champ

With Pete Alonso going on the injured list for several weeks, the New York Mets are looking for a power boost. They hope they've found it, by signing former major league HR-leader Luke Voit.

It's a minor league deal, but if he shows some thunder in his bat at Triple-A Syracuse, he could make a quick ascension to fill a huge void in the Mets' lineup. Alonso was leading the majors in homers with 22.

Voit, 32, was dropped by the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this month after going homerless in 74 plate appearances over 22 games, with a measly .548 OPS.

Last season, he split his time between the San Diego Padres and the Washington Nationals, putting up only a .710 OPS, but blasting 22 homers in 500 at-bats.

In the shortened 2020 season, Voit led all of baseball with 22 HR and 52 RBIs in just 56 games with the New York Yankees.

The Mets are hoping that a return to the Big Apple can reignite Voit's power bat.
