Pittsburgh Pirates Claim RHP From Detroit Tigers

The Pittsburgh Pirates have added some pitching depth, reaching onto the waiver wire to claim right-hander Edwin Uceta from the Detroit Tigers.

The 25-year-old has been optioned to the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate in Indianapolis.

Uceta has had short trials in each of the last two seasons, with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks, and it hasn't gone especially well. He's compiled a 6.27 ERA with a 1.39 WHIP. He has been able to record strikeouts at a 9.2 K/9 rate, but his walk rate is bloated, at 4.6 per nine.

The Dominican product was claimed by Detroit off waivers in the offseason, but after an unsuccessful camp (4.91 ERA) they DFA'd him, leading to the Pirates' waiver claim now.

To make room on the 40-man for Uceta, right-hand starter JT Brubaker was transferred to the 60-day injured list with "elbow discomfort."
