Detroit Tigers Claim Pitcher Off Waivers From Cardinals

On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers announced that they had claimed right-handed reliever Freddy Pacheco off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Pacheco had been optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals earlier this month due to his ongoing right elbow tightness. However, the Cardinals decided to remove him altogether from their 40-man roster, leading to the Tigers claiming him.

As a result of the acquisition, the Tigers have placed left-hander Tarik Skubal, who is recovering from an elbow injury, on the 60-day injured list to make room for Pacheco on the 40-man roster.

The 24-year-old pitcher will now head to Triple-A Toledo to continue his recovery and could potentially be considered for a relief role with the Tigers later in the year.

Pacheco showed promise last season, making 50 combined relief appearances between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis with a 3.05 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 62 innings.
