Blue Jays Sign Utilityman

The Toronto Blue Jays have added to their depth with a utilityman option, signing infielder/outfielder Ernie Clement to a minor league deal.

Clement, who turns 27 next week, was released by the A's last week, and now gets an invite to the Jays' big league camp. It's likely, however, that he'll be slotted into Triple-A Buffalo as a depth piece, notes Jays beat writer Keegan Matheson of mlb.com. That'll take the Rochester, NY native close to home.

Clement has time in the majors with the Cleveland Guardians and Oakland A's over the last two seasons, with a total of 312 plate appearances. He's only been able to muster a .204 average and .525 OPS, but his versatility could come in handy. He's played some first base, second base, shortstop and third base around the infield, while also playing a bit of left field.

He also features some speed, having stolen 43 bases in the minors the past few years.
