Biggest Spring Standout: Colorado Rockies

Oftentimes, the "biggest standout" in spring training for a team is an untested rookie, or a big time prospect. But in the case of the Colorado Rockies, it's a longtime veteran looking to rebound from a poor season.

We continue our series looking at each team's biggest spring standouts, with starting pitcher German Marquez of the Rockies.

He was an All-Star in 2021, and despite spending his entire seven-year career pitching in the thin air of Denver, he's had a few nice seasons on the mound for the Rockies. But 2022 was not one of them. He posted a 4.95 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and his lowest strikeout rate since he was a rookie, clocking in at just 7.4 K/9.

But this spring Marquez has been untouchable. In 17 innings, he's allowed just one earned run, and has struck out 20 against just two walks. His ERA is 0.59 and his WHIP an equally-miniscule 0.77.

He's been named the Rockies' Opening Day starter.

For veterans, we often take spring training stats with a grain of salt, but if Marquez is back to being a rock at the front of the Rockies rotation, manager Bud Black will be one happy camper.
