Cincinnati Reds Claim Left-Handed Pitcher Off Waivers

Snatched off the waiver wire.

The Cincinnati Reds have claimed left-handed pitcher Bennett Sousa off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

Sousa, who was designated for assignment on Monday, struggled in his 25 appearances for the White Sox last season, posting an 8.41 ERA, 1.72 WHIP, and 12 strikeouts over 20.1 innings of work.

Despite his struggles in the majors, Sousa has had success in the minors, with a solid 2.78 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 222 strikeouts over 175 innings of work in his career. He's made 132 relief appearances and converted 23 saves.

Sousa was bumped from the White Sox's 40-man roster last week to make room for Elvis Andrus, but the 27-year-old left-hander will get another chance to help as a reliever with the Reds.

Since he throws in the mid-90s and has a pretty good slider, there's potential for Sousa to impress in camp for a shot at Cincinnati's Opening Day roster.
