Top Shortstop Prospect In Baseball Revealed For 2023

MLB Pipeline has named its top prospects all around the diamond for 2023. And the top up-and-comer at shortstop is a familiar name. The winner on this list, and still champion at the keystone, is once again New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe.

Volpe was named Pipeline's 'Hitting Prospect of the Year' in 2021, and top shortstop prospect of 2022, and now repeats in 2023. His label as a "prospect" might be short-lived this year, however, as he could very well make his major league debut with the Yankees before long.

The Bronx Bombers didn't go out and sign a big free agent, or anyone else, to play short this season, and depending on how he shows out at spring training, Volpe could win the starting job for Opening Day.

The 21-year-old tore it up in Double-A and Triple-A in 2022, stealing 50 bases, hitting 21 home runs, and posting an OPS of .802. His defense was just as superb.

MLB Pipeline says that once he takes over at short for the Yankees, "he seems a safe bet to hold down that place for years to come." They also call him a top candidate to win Rookie of the Year.
