Tampa Bay Rays Sign Young Starter

Joining the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Rays have signed pitcher Elvin Rodriguez to a minor-league contract with an invite to spring training.

Rodriguez made his major league debut last season with the Detroit Tigers, recording a brutal 10.62 ERA, 1.92 WHIP, and 25 strikeouts across 29.2 innings and five starts.

In the minors, the twenty-four-year-old recorded a 4.98 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, and 91 strikeouts over 99.1 innings of work. He made 21 starts, two relief appearances and held a 6-4 record.

Rodriguez has yet to find success as a starter, so there's a good chance the Rays will try using him as a full-time reliever. Regardless, he's still a work in progress.
