Blue Jays Claim Pitcher Off Waivers From Yankees

Joining a division rival.

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed pitcher Junior Fernandez off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Fernandez was designated for assignment by the Yankees last month to free up a 40-man roster spot for the re-signing of Aaron Judge.

The flame-throwing pitcher posted a strong 2.41 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts over 18.2 innings of work last season with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Unfortunately, the twenty-five-year-old has dealt with command issues his whole career, so that will be something the Blue Jays will have to work with.

In the minors last season, Fernandez posted a 4.87 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts across 44.1 innings of work.

Let's see if Pete Walker and the Blue Jays can improve upon Fernandez's potential.
