Report: Boston Red Sox & Rafael Devers "Galaxies Apart"

This will not go over well with Boston Red Sox fans, who are already reeling from the departure of their beloved All-Star shortstop of 10 years, Xander BogaertsAccording to a new report, the team and All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers are "galaxies apart" in contract extension negotiations.

“According to multiple league sources," said ESPN's Joon Lee, "the Red Sox and Devers are 'galaxies apart' in their contract negotiations. The current expectation from Devers and his camp is that the third baseman will be a free agent at the end of 2023, given the current state of contract talks.”

Yikes.

Chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, for his part, says "We will probably, I think, go beyond reason to try to get this done. Hopefully we can get this done. There are always going to be limitations, like people can just put something plain out of reach. Some people love to bet on themselves and I hope he hits 63 homers if he does that."

That was not long after he said, of losing Bogaerts to the San Diego Padres, "there are a couple of regrets." The understatement of the year in Boston?

The fact is, they lowballed their shortstop when they had a chance to re-sign him last season, and now seem to be doing the same to Devers.

Red Sox fans still haven't forgiven the team for trading superstar Mookie Betts in 2020 rather than re-signing him as well.

Tough times in Beantown.
