MLB Rumors: Top 3 Potential Destinations For Christian Vazquez

With Willson Contreras off the market, having signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, former Boston Red Sox veteran Christian Vazquez is the top No. 1 catcher available in free agency at this point. There are a number of teams looking hard at the backstop.

San Diego Padres

An interesting connection has arisen here, as the Padres have famously added Vazquez's longtime Red Sox teammate Xander Bogaerts. That might give the Friars a leg up on the competition.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubbies need to replace their longtime backstop Contreras, and Vazquez could certainly be an option to fill the spot.

Boston Red Sox

Could a reunion be in the offing for Vazquez and the team he won his first World Series with? A recent report from chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom certainly seems to indicate as much.

The Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Guardians and the incumbent Houston Astros are also in the mix here. But if Vazquez wants a starting job (and he does), the Astros might not be the best fit for a return, as they really like their defensive specialist Martin Maldonado, who caught 113 games for them this past season, including the bulk of games still even after the trade deadline acquisition of Vazquez.
