MLB Rumors: 5 Teams Pursuing Christian Vazquez

The catching market this offseason is a hot one, what with free agents and trade candidates floating everywhere. Former Boston Red Sox No. 1 backstop Christian Vazquez, 32, is right in the center of it, and he has himself a pretty robust market.

For teams looking for offense from their catcher, Willson Contreras is a target; but if you're more interested in defense behind the plate, Vazquez is your man.

According to reports from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic and Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, five teams are "in" on Vazquez, and the market is likely dictating that he'll get a deal of 3 or 4 years in length.

St. Louis Cardinals

This one makes a lot of sense, as the Cards are always all about sound defense. Vazquez has always provided that. He had 11 defensive runs saved in 2022.

San Francisco Giants

Vazquez wouldn't exactly be a Buster Posey replacement, but he would offer solid consistency behind the plate that the Giants didn't have in 2022.

Cleveland Guardians

This is a team that's been in on just about all of the available catchers on the market, and Vazquez is no exception.

Minnesota Twins

Another team looking for a solid backstop, after the Gary Sanchez experiment failed after just one year.

San Diego Padres

One of the positions the Friars are looking to solidify this winter.

The Houston Astros, who he finished the season with, are seen as unlikely, as he wants a starting role, and they already like what Martin Maldonado brings behind the plate.
