Report: Mets Meeting Today With Top Free Agent

So how confident are the New York Mets that they can re-sign their ace pitcher Jacob deGrom? Could the fact that they'll be meeting today with one of the other top starters on the market be a sign?

According to Mets Insider Joel Sherman, the Mets will meet on a Zoom call with two-time All-Star Carlos Rodon today. Talks have been ongoing with deGrom, but they certainly have to cover themselves in the eventuality that some team, like the Los Angeles Dodgers, swoops in to steal him. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic opines that the Dodgers "relish the type of short-term, high-dollar deal deGrom is likely to command."

Rodon does have an injury history to consider for any team ready to shell out multi-year big bucks, including Tommy John Surgery in 2019 which limited him to just 11 games through the end of 2020. He allayed some of those fears by making a career-high 31 starts this past season, while posting a 2.88 ERA and a 1.028 WHIP with the San Francisco Giants. He earned his second consecutive All-Star berth, after a 2.37 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP with the Chicago White Sox in 2021.

Rodon turned down his player option on $22M for the coming season from the Giants to enter free agency.
