MLB Insider: "A Wasted Opportunity" If This Team Doesn't Spend Large On Free Agents

There are several teams that most people expect to spend big money this offseason, including, among others, the San Francisco Giants, the Texas Rangers, the Philadelphia Phillies and likely the New York Yankees. But there's one under-the-radar team that absolutely must spend to take it to the next level, according to MLB Insider Jeff Passan who is at the GM Meetings in Las Vegas.

"The most intriguing team to me is Baltimore," said Passan on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM today. "The Orioles had a really good 2022... Adley Rutschman... Gunnar Henderson... a number of other guys are coming... They have a chance to have an incredible young core in place... And (currently) the Orioles are spending about as much on their payroll as some team is going to spend on Aaron Judge next year.

"So, it's time for them to go out and spend. And if spending means getting one of the really good shortstops that are out there... adding a dynamic bat and a dynamic arm to that team I think would go a really long way. And considering the (little) amount of money the Orioles have spent on payroll in recent years, it's time. It's warranted, it's necessary, and if they don't do it it'll be a wasted opportunity."

It makes a lot of sense. With the great young pieces in place that Passan mentioned, and one of the top pitching prospects in the minors, Grayson Rodriguez on the way, they could be poised to make a lot of noise in the tough AL East by adding a bat such as Trea Turner or Carlos Correa, and/or an arm like Jacob deGrom. It's there for the taking for the Orioles if they want to go get it. Just ask Jeff Passan.
