“Hodgepodge of Nothingness”: Hall Of Famer Trashes Pirates On Broadcast

The Pittburgh Pirates have some exciting young talent on the way as they continue their rebuild. But don't tell broadcaster and Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley. The outspoken and controversial Boston Red Sox NESN analyst blasted the Pirates on the broadcast last night, calling them pathetic, among other things.

His comments, on the air, included, "You talk about a no-name lineup. There's no team like this."

"This is a hodgepodge of nothingness."

"It's ridiculous. It really is. Pathetic."

The Pirates have the lowest payroll in the majors, and are concentrating on upgrading their farm system will plenty of young talent. But Eckersley doesn't seem to care much.

“Tell me they have a great farm system,” Eckersley said. “Tell me they do. That’s what they’re doing, I’d assume.”

The Pirates are 6-17 in their last 23 games, and have scored the fewest runs in baseball since 2020.

Pirates fans will be happy to hear, however, that Eckersley, whose 24-year career included an MVP and a Cy Young, will be retiring from the broadcast booth after this season.
