Giants Release Former Closer

The Giants have officially released pitcher Jake McGee.

McGee was designated for assignment this past Saturday and passed through waivers unclaimed. The thirty-five year old entered the season as a possible closer option before Camilo Doval's breakout, and McGee's ineffectiveness, caused him to lose the role.

McGee posted an ugly 7.17 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with just 11 strikeouts in 21 innings. He converted three of six save opportunities this season.

In his 13 year career, McGee has enjoyed success in the majors where he's posted a 3.64 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 79 saves and 599 strikeouts in 556 innings.

It will be interesting to see if a team picks up the veteran reliever to help bolster their bullpen.
