Padres Claim Infielder Off Waivers From Diamondbacks

The San Diego Padres have added some infield depth by claiming utilityman Sergio Alcantara off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Alcantara is in his 3rd season in the big leagues, though has yet to show much at the dish. He was batting .189 in 53 at-bats this season for the D-Backs, while playing mostly at third base, with a few appearances at shortstop and second. Overall, in parts of three seasons, he's a .197 hitter, with a .610 OPS. But it's his defensive versatility that has won him some time on major league rosters.

He started 44 games at short for the Cubs in 2021, and with the Padres still waiting on the return of Fernando Tatis Jr. sometime later in June, he provides another stopgap, to add to Ha-Seong Kim. Top prospect CJ Abrams has had an even tougher time at the plate than Alcantara, hitting only .182, and he undoubtedly needs more seasoning in the minors. (Update: Abrams, indeed, sent to Triple-A)

To make room for Alcantara, the Padres have placed outfielder Matt Beaty on the 10-day IL with a shoulder issue.
