Blue Jays Add Two Key Pieces Back to Roster

Two players who've missed large chunks of the young season are returning today for the Toronto Blue Jays. The team has activated catcher Danny Jansen and starting pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu. And that will indeed be the starting battery for Saturday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Jays have optioned pitcher Trent Thornton and catcher Tyler Heineman to make room on the roster.

Jansen started the season like a house on fire, with two home runs and four hits through the first three games before he went down with an oblique strain. The hot-hitting to start 2022 continued a trend for Jansen, who finished last season by hitting .310 in September, with 5 HR, 17 RBIs and a 1.072 OPS.

Ryu is considered an important part of the Jays' rotation, but he struggled mightily in his first two starts this season, pitching to a 13.50 ERA, allowing 11 hits and 11 earned runs in just 7.1 innings. The 35-year-old lefty missed nearly a month with left forearm inflammation.

If both players can return to top form, it should be a huge boost to a scuffling team, currently riding a 5-game losing streak.
