Baltimore Orioles Sign Infielder

The Baltimore Orioles have signed infielder Shed Long to a minor league contract. Because he was outrighted off of the Seattle Mariners' 40-man roster, he was able to sign this deal during the lockout.

Long played each of the last three seasons with the Mariners. In 110 games with the team, he had 12 home runs, 41 RBIs, and a .216 batting average in total. He was once viewed as one of the top prospects in the sport, but he has yet to take off significantly at the major league level. He will be looking to do just that now with the Orioles.

The Orioles could end up being a good location for him to become a full-time major league player. At this juncture, they have one of the weakest rosters in the entire league, so he should be able to get plenty of opportunities to play from here.

Long also is capable of playing in the outfield, so he will offer Baltimore more options than one. Overall, this has the potential to be a solid depth signing for them. Let's see how the 26-year-old performs from here.
