Miami Marlins Nearing Extension With Key Pitcher

The Miami Marlins are very close to signing pitcher Sandy Alcantara to a five-year contract extension. With that, he's expected to make more than $55 million guaranteed.

Alcantara may have had a 9-15 record during the 2021 season, but he surely did his part to keep the Marlins in games. Although his loss total was very high, he also had a solid 3.19 ERA and career-high 201 strikeouts.

With Alcantara still only being 26 years old, he absolutely has the potential to improve even more from here. During the 2019 season, he made the All-Star Game, too. Why should he not be able to do the same thing from here?

If Alcantara is truly guaranteed a little more than $11 million per season, that's a very affordable salary for a pitcher of his skill. The Marlins should feel very happy about that once it's officially finalized.

In five MLB seasons between the St. Louis Cardinals and Marlins, Alcantara has a 20-34 record, 3.49 ERA and 431 career strikeouts.
