3 Potential Landing Spots For J.D. Martinez If He Opts Out

Boston Red Sox DH J.D. Martinez has the power to opt out of his contract this off-season. The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal recently noted that it's very likely that Martinez does, as he could get more than his current salary on the open market. It's hard to argue against that, as Martinez had another All-Star campaign in 2021. In 148 games, he had 28 home runs, 99 RBIs and a .286 batting average.

Teams looking for a little bit more pop to their lineup absolutely should consider the 34-year-old. Here are three who come to mind.

Boston Red Sox: Even if Martinez opts out, the Boston Red Sox absolutely should try to sign him to a new contract. His bounce back campaign was a huge reason for the Red Sox once again getting into the postseason. He's still one of their top players and has worked wonderfully for them.

Tampa Bay Rays: With Nelson Cruz having an expiring deal, the Rays should be looking to add a DH. Assuming Martinez hits the open market, they should consider stealing him from their AL rival. After the way the Rays went down in the postseason, it wouldn't be a bad thing to bring in another star talent to help their chances of bringing home a World Series.

Oakland A's: The A's could use an upgrade at DH and Martinez would certainly provide them with that. The Khris Davis reunion was nice, but certainly not a long-term fix. Furthermore, Martinez would be a massive improvement from veteran Mitch Moreland. With all of this, I wouldn't count the A's out of the potential Martinez sweepstakes.
