San Diego Padres Close To Acquiring Max Scherzer

The San Diego Padres are hoping to put the slam on their competition in the trade market, as they've agreed on players in a trade for 3-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer from the Washington Nationals.

But sources say this isn't quite a done deal just yet, as other teams are still trying to outbid the Padres offer.

If they complete the deal, the Padres will be able to roll out a rotation of Scherzer, Yu Darvish, and Joe Musgrove and not have to rely on Blake Snell, who's having a disaster of a season.

San Diego sits 5.5 games back of the San Francisco Giants for 1st place in the NL West, and 3.5 back of the Dodgers for the 1st Wild Card. But even if they are forced into that one-game playdown to move on into the Division Series, they'd be pretty content sending Max Scherzer to the mound.
