NY Mets Hand Out Multi-Year Extension to .200 Hitting Backup
The New York Mets, at 11-21, are one of the biggest disappointments in MLB this season. But their latest move won't do much to soothe the savages in Queens who are looking for major changes.
The Mets have signed backup catcher Luis Torrens to a two-year extension.

The deal is worth $11.5M with a $5.75M AAV. It also includes $2M upfront and carries another $2M in incentives.
The odd move comes in the midst of a massive slump for the weak-hitting catcher, as Torrens has gone just 2-for-18 without a run or an RBI over his last eight appearances. On the season, he's batting .200 with a .467 OPS and no homers in 31 plate appearances.
Last season, he played in 92 games for the Mets, hitting .226 with 5 homers, 29 RBIs and a .629 OPS.
He's a solid defender behind the plate, however, and as long as Francisco Alvarez can stay healthy as the starter, Torrens shouldn't have to take on too much of a load.
