Baltimore Orioles Sign Versatile Infielder

The Baltimore Orioles are adding experienced depth, signing veteran infielder Thairo Estrada to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

With Jordan Westburg expected to miss at least the early portion of the season and other infield injuries piling up, the move gives Baltimore a versatile option who could factor into the roster sooner than expected.

Thairo Estrada Gives Orioles Experience and Versatility

Estrada, who turned 30 this week, brings seven seasons of major league experience and the ability to play multiple positions.

Across 508 career games, he owns a .251/.299/.392 slash line with 1,870 plate appearances and back-to-back 14-home run seasons in 2022 and 2023 while serving as a regular for the San Francisco Giants

From 2021 to 2023, he produced a 105 wRC+ with a .266 average, providing above-average offensive production while playing steady defense at second base.

Last season with the Colorado Rockies, Estrada appeared in just 39 games and hit .253 after a series of injuries limited his availability.

A fractured wrist suffered in spring training delayed his debut until late May, and additional thumb and hamstring issues eventually cut his season short in early August.

Opportunity Opens as Orioles Deal With Injuries

Both Westburg and second baseman Jackson Holliday are expected to open the season on the injured list, creating early uncertainty around the infield.

Estrada immediately becomes one of the most experienced players competing for a bench or short-term starting role, capable of covering second base, shortstop, third base, and even corner outfield spots if needed.

The Orioles’ front office has prioritized adding competition and depth rather than rushing younger players into everyday roles.

If he shows he’s healthy and productive this spring, he could carve out a role for a club coming off a strong competitive stretch in the American League and looking to maintain its depth over a long season.
