MLB Rumors: Edwin Diaz Reveals His Chances Of Returning To Mets
After opting out of the final two years and roughly 38 million dollars on his record-setting reliever deal, Diaz says there is only a “50-50” chance he returns to the Mets.
He made that admission while accepting another National League reliever award in Las Vegas, stressing that he loves New York but will ultimately chase the best offer and a real shot at a World Series ring.
Edwin Diaz Balances Love For Mets With Business Reality
Diaz has not closed the door on Queens at all. He confirmed that his representatives have already spoken with the Mets about a new contract, and team president of baseball operations David Stearns has said publicly that the club would love to bring back both Diaz and Pete Alonso.
The tone, however, is very different from 2022, when the Mets rushed to give Diaz a five-year, 102 million dollar deal just days after the World Series. This time the market is wide open, Diaz has opted out, and he is reportedly seeking essentially the same five-year, 102 million dollar type of contract he landed the first time.

On the field, he has every reason to aim high. After losing all of 2023 to a freak knee injury at the World Baseball Classic and struggling to regain form in 2024, Diaz roared back in 2025 as one of the sport’s truly elite closers again.
Across 62 appearances he posted a 1.63 ERA with 98 strikeouts in 66 and one third innings, locking down 28 saves and earning another All-Star nod along with a reliever of the year award. For his career, the 31-year-old owns 253 saves, a 2.82 ERA and a long track record as a late-inning weapon dating back to his early days with the Seattle Mariners.
That kind of profile, paired with his age and renewed velocity, makes him the clear headliner in a closer market that also features arms like Robert Suarez, Devin Williams, Raisel Iglesias, Ryan Helsley, Pete Fairbanks and Kenley Jansen.
Blue Jays Meeting Shows Edwin Diaz Has Leverage
The big wrinkle for the Mets is that Edwin Diaz free agency is not happening in a vacuum. According to multiple reports, the Toronto Blue Jays met with his agents at the GM Meetings, and they may be uniquely motivated after watching Jeff Hoffman blow a ninth inning lead in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hoffman’s 33 saves came with a 4.37 ERA and seven blown chances, which leaves Toronto in an obvious position to chase a more dominant, battle-tested finisher. If the Blue Jays are willing to go to Diaz’s preferred years and dollars, they give him a contender that just came within inches of a title and a massive stage in a passionate market.

All of this puts the Mets in a very different spot than the last time they did this dance. They know Diaz loves Queens, they know he has deep bonds with teammates like Francisco Lindor and Kodai Senga, and they know their bullpen is instantly less imposing if he walks.
