MLB Rumors: Insider Links Surprising AL Team To Alex Bregman

Boston Red Sox infielder Alex Bregman throws the ball during 2025 game.

As free agency heats up, few expected the Kansas City Royals to be among the contenders for Alex Bregman, yet that’s exactly what insider Jon Heyman is reporting.

The star third baseman, who’s opting out of his deal with the Boston Red Sox, could end up with an unexpected American League rival if the Royals decide to flex their growing financial muscle.

Royals Eye Bregman as Middle-Order Upgrade

Heyman’s report notes that Kansas City is “looking for a top hitter” and has been linked not only to Bregman but also to Cody Bellinger and Kyle Tucker

While Tucker’s projected $300 million price tag likely puts him out of reach, Bregman’s expected market value (under $200 million) fits the Royals’ newfound willingness to spend. For a franchise that once gave its largest free-agent deal ($72 million) to Alex Gordon, even entering this conversation is a massive philosophical shift.

Bregman’s résumé makes him a logical target. The two-time All-Star has averaged 23 home runs over the past four seasons with a .351 on-base percentage and .803 OPS, production that would instantly boost a Royals lineup that ranked 26th in MLB in runs scored and home runs.

Pairing him with Bobby Witt Jr. could finally give Kansas City the impact bat they’ve been missing in the heart of their order.

Fit in Kansas City Raises Positional Questions

The biggest question isn’t whether the Royals should pursue Bregman, it’s where they’d play him. Maikel Garcia just posted a 5.6 fWAR season at third base and was a finalist for his first Gold Glove.

However, both Garcia and Bregman have experience moving around the diamond. Bregman was reportedly open to shifting to second base during his time in Boston, while Garcia has played across the infield and even in the outfield.

If Kansas City can convince one of them to adjust positions, Bregman’s addition could turn the Royals from a near-playoff team into a legitimate AL contender.

The Red Sox may remain favorites to re-sign him, but with the Royals now signaling real intent to spend, the idea of Bregman bringing his bat to Kauffman Stadium suddenly doesn’t sound so far-fetched.
