Former All-Star Becomes Free Agent After Dominating Triple-A
Trey Mancini hits free agency, and contending teams are watching
The 33-year-old first baseman opted out of his minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday after slashing .308/.373/.522 with 16 home runs and 62 RBIs in 74 games at Triple-A Reno.
With no path to the majors in Arizona, Mancini is seeking another big-league opportunity, and several playoff hopefuls may be ready to make the call.

Orioles reunion or Red Sox solution?
The most buzzed-about destination is Baltimore. With Ryan Mountcastle still out and Ryan O’Hearn struggling, the Baltimore Orioles could use a steady, right-handed bat. Mancini, a fan favorite in Baltimore and 2021 Comeback Player of the Year, would instantly boost morale and depth.
But they’re not the only AL East team circling. The Boston Red Sox are also a clear fit, having lost Triston Casas for the year and currently relying on a platoon of journeymen. Mancini’s .338 career average at Fenway Park and veteran clubhouse presence make him a low-risk, high-upside option for Boston’s playoff push.

Mancini hasn’t played in the majors since 2023, but his Triple-A numbers show he’s still got pop.
After beating colon cancer in 2020 and sitting out 2024, he’s returned with purpose. With playoff races heating up and teams looking for inexpensive upgrades at first base or DH, Mancini’s story, bat, and leadership may earn him one last shot at October baseball.
