MLB Trade Rumors: Padres Eyeing Move For $110M All-Star Pitcher

San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt walks off the field during 2025 game.

The San Diego Padres are emerging as serious contenders to land Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta, according to multiple reports.

Padres linked to Freddy Peralta in potential trade deadline blockbuster

With the trade deadline approaching and their rotation thinned by injuries, the Padres are reportedly eyeing the All-Star right-hander to stabilize their pitching staff for a playoff push. Peralta, 29, is in the midst of a stellar season, posting a 2.90 ERA over 93 innings and leading the league in several advanced metrics.

Why Peralta fits San Diego's playoff push

Peralta’s elite pitch mix, anchored by a fastball used 58.2% of the time, has baffled hitters all season. His slider (.200 BA against) and changeup (.188 BA against) have each produced a 22.2% Put Away rate, with the slider generating a massive 61.1% whiff rate.

Combine that with an ERA+ of 138 and just an $8 million salary, and it’s no wonder Peralta is considered one of the most attractive trade targets on the market. With Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, and Michael King all sidelined, San Diego’s 3.88 team ERA could benefit immensely from his addition.

Brewers’ history adds intrigue to Peralta rumors

Though Milwaukee sits in playoff position, their trade history, including last year’s Devin Williams move and the 2022 Josh Hader deal with these same Padres, suggests they won’t shy away from big decisions.

With team control on Peralta through 2026, the Brewers could wait until the offseason. But if the Padres offer the right return, history says Milwaukee might listen. GM A.J. Preller is no stranger to deadline surprises, and if the Friars make a deep run, this could be the swing that changes their October fortunes.
