MLB Trade Rumors: Huge Update on Sandy Alcantara Trade Talks
The on-again, off-again trade possibilities for Miami Marlins starter and former Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, are apparently on again, after his last start.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, it appears that the pitcher's most recent start, earlier this week, of seven innings with no earned runs, no walks and just four hits allowed, has significantly boosted his stock again.
Trade interest in Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara has soared since his last start with teams now convinced he will be moved by the July 31 deadline.
The 2022 Cy Young Award winner is coming back this season after missing 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. He's mostly had a brutal campaign, with a 6.66 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. His strikeouts are also way down, at just 6.7 per nine innings.
But rival teams are obviously still enticed by what they know he can do, if he's right.
It'll be interesting to see how much of a return the Marlins can get, and if it's not a nice haul, it's quite possible they could wait until the offseason to pull the trigger.
In his '22 Cy season, Alcantara had a 2.28 ERA with a 0.98 WHIP and a 207:50 strikeout to walk ratio.
His 2023 season wasn't terrific, with a 4.14 ERA, and he began feeling trouble in his elbow at the beginning of September of that year. He went on the 15-day injured list for the first time in his career with an arm issue on Sept. 6, and was shut down for good two weeks later, with the surgery coming in October.
If he is somehow able to return to form, he could the difference maker for an acquiring team. The San Diego Padres and Boston Red Sox are two of the many teams that could be interested.
