Insider Proposes Wild Yankees - Mets Trade To Boost Both Teams

The New York Yankees are desperate to fill their gaping hole at third base by next week's trade deadline. And the New York Mets need an outfielder. Those two realities have driven former MLB GM and insider for MLB Network Jim Bowden to propose a wild contender-to-contender trade that would see both the Yankees and the Mets address those needs. It goes like this:

NY Yankees receive:

  • Mark Vientos, 3B

NY Mets receive:
  • Jasson Dominguez, OF

This intriguing scenario would only be of interest to the Yankees, says Bowden, if they are unable to land their top choice, Eugenio Suarez of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Of Dominguez and Vientos, both of whom struggling this season, he says, "Two similar talents, a change of scenery might help both guys."

He explains that Dominguez, once the top prospect in the system, is expendable as the Yankees have a crowded outfield, with Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham, in addition to top prospect Spencer Jones, who's knocking on the door.

"Quite frankly, when the Yankees promote Jones, they're going to have a better team. That may end up being one of the best acquisitions they make at the deadline, just calling him up. So because of the outfield depth, they could take an outfielder (Dominguez) and turn him into a third baseman (Vientos)."

Indeed, in 18 games at Triple-A, Jones has 10 homers, 21 RBIs and a 1.303 OPS. Could that mean that The Martian's days in the Bronx could be coming to an end? Dominguez has not performed as hoped this season, batting .254 with a .727 OPS and just eight homers in 83 games.

As for Vientos, coming off a breakout year in 2024 with the Mets, when he launched 27 HR with 71 RBIs and an .837 OPS, he has struggled mightily this season, batting just .223 with six long balls in 71 games.

Both do need a change of scenery, and this would be an eye-popping way to get it done.
