San Francisco Giants Sign Former Top Draft Pick Outfielder

San Diego Padres outfielder Cal Mitchell runs during 2024 game.

The San Francisco Giants have signed outfielder Cal Mitchell to a minor league contract and assigned him to Double-A Richmond, giving the struggling Flying Squirrels lineup a much-needed boost.

Mitchell was recently released by the Chicago White Sox after a tough start at Triple-A Charlotte, where he hit just .111 with 14 strikeouts in 27 plate appearances. Now with a new opportunity, he’ll look to rediscover his offensive rhythm at a lower level.

Giants Add Cal Mitchell on Minor League Deal

Mitchell, a former second-round pick by the Pirates in 2017, appeared in 69 big-league games with Pittsburgh, posting a .226 average and five home runs.

While he hasn’t stuck in the majors, he’s shown flashes of promise in the minors, including a 22-homer season with the San Diego Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in 2024. Despite the strong year, San Diego didn’t promote him, and Mitchell later signed with Chicago before being let go in April.

At 26, Mitchell brings experience and left-handed power to a Richmond team that entered the week with one of the lowest OPS marks in the Eastern League.

His pull-heavy swing has produced double-digit home run seasons in four of his eight pro years, though it also comes with swing-and-miss risk.
