MLB Rumors: Jose Altuve Makes Big Request To Astros

Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve looks on during 2025 game.

After more than a decade of anchoring the top of the Houston Astros' lineup, Jose Altuve made a surprising request: move him out of the leadoff spot.

The veteran infielder-turned-left fielder told manager Joe Espada he needed a few more seconds to recover between innings now that he’s patrolling the outfield. Espada granted the request—and Altuve immediately made it pay off. Hitting second for the first time in nearly two years, Altuve crushed a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning of Houston’s 8-5 win over the Tigers.

Altuve’s Sparks Lineup Shakeup

“My at-bats haven’t been really good or the way I want it lately,” Altuve said. “Maybe hitting with [Jeremy Peña] on base will help me get to the point I want to.”

Peña, inserted as the new leadoff man, went 2-for-4 and scored ahead of Altuve’s homer. Manager Joe Espada credited Altuve’s awareness and leadership in suggesting the change, noting, “He knows himself better than anyone else here.” The move also gives Altuve more time to prep after running in from left, a position he’s playing regularly for the first time in his career.

Astros See Signs of Offensive Life

With Houston’s lineup searching for answers early in the season, Altuve’s switch might be the spark they’ve needed. Peña has been one of the team’s most consistent hitters, and Altuve batting behind a speed threat could unlock a new rhythm.

“He can be very dynamic on the bases,” Altuve said of Peña. “This is going to help me, help him, and help the whole team.” Houston hopes the adjustment helps jumpstart a slumping offense and gives more protection to sluggers like Yordan Alvarez down the lineup.
