Insider Absolutely Destroys Blue Jays Manager John Schneider for Gausman Treatment
The Toronto Blue Jays continue their tumble down the standings in the American League East, losing their 7th game in their last 10 on Sunday. But the manner in which starting pitcher Kevin Gausman was left hung out to dry in their 11-2 loss to the New York Yankees has left a notable baseball insider to absolutely rip Jays manager John Schneider.
“If I saw my manager leave a pitcher in for 53 pitches [in one inning], by the 8th inning I’d be in his chair waiting for him... That is inexcusable.”@JimBowdenGM on Kevin Gausman’s gruelling third inning on Sunday with @SNJeffBlair & Kevin Barker.#LightsUpLetsGo pic.twitter.com/uovHLQGH6u

Former MLB general manager and current insider for The Athletic and the MLB Network Radio on SirisuXM just torched Schneider on Sportsnet 590 after the manager allowed Gausman to throw 53 pitches in the third inning while surrendering six earned runs on five walks and a couple of big hits.
Oh my gosh! That is a huge deal... I was a GM for 17 years. If I saw my manager leave a pitcher in for 53 pitches [in one inning], by the 8th inning I’d be in his office sitting in his chair waiting for him... We've got $110 million invested in Kevin Gausman, and you're gonna let him throw 53 pitches in an inning and put him at risk for injury?... 53 pitches?!... That is inexcusable!
Gausman was finally, eventually, pulled from the inning with two outs after a bases-clearing double by Austin Wells. But to make matters worse, he was ejected after arguing with the umpire, and then fell down the dugout steps. Yikes.

This is certainly not the first frustrating and questionable move that the Jays have made with Gausman in his time with the team. In the Wild Card game in 2022, Schneider and the Jays took the opposite approach, as the Toronto ace was sailing along with an 8-1 lead, but was pulled in the 6th inning, then watched as the Blue Jays absolutely collapsed and were eliminated in a 10-9 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
The next year in Game 1 of the 2023 Wild Card series, he was pulled after just 4 innings, though he had struggled to that point, with the Minnesota Twins going on to sweep the Jays in their second straight controversial and stunning playoff exit.
