St Louis Cardinals Eyeing Two Starting Pitchers

The St Louis Cardinals enjoyed a 90-win season in 2021 and are looking to upgrade their rotation for 2022. Reports have been flying out about who could be on the Cardinals radar and two names have been highlighted by Derrick Goold of the St Louis Dispatch.

Goold mentions free agents Steven Matz and Alex Cobb as two candidates who the Cardinals are considering and two names that have a ton of interest in them league wide. Both starters are coming off fine seasons and given their ability to pitch to groundball contact, they could elevate their games even more pitching in front of one of the best defenses in the league.

Goold had this to say about the Cardinals next steps:

Smarting from the lessons of 2021, the Cardinals will continue to focus on pitching as the area to fortify for a division-title run in 2022. They remain in negotiations with reliever Luis Garcia and could seek to sign an addition late-inning reliever beyond Garcia. They also would like to sign a starter for the rotation, one who could provide a steadying presence. Lefty Steven Matz attended the GM meetings, and he’s drawn interest from the Cardinals as has Alex Cobb. Both sport sinkers. There will be conversations between Max Scherzer’s agent Boras and the Cardinals, and they’ve explored a variety of other candidates, including Nick Martinez, who is returning from Japan.
Expect the Cardinals to be busy this offseason with pitching at their fore front. Matz and Cobb appear to be the favorites to land in St Louis as the team tries to get back to winning a World Series.
